PHEONIX DANCONG TEA
Phoenix Dancong is a distinctive oolong tea traditionally produced in the Phoenix Mountains of Chaozhou, Guangdong. It is especially famous for its remarkably expressive and complex natural aromas.
Different cultivars and traditional selections can display very different aromatic characters—from orchid, honey, and ripe fruit to citrus, almond, spice, and other distinctive fragrances. This extraordinary diversity has made Phoenix Dancong one of the most aromatic styles of Chinese tea.
Origin & Character
The finest Phoenix Dancong teas are closely connected to their mountain environment, particularly the high-elevation tea gardens around Wudong Mountain (乌岽山).
Altitude, cultivar, tree age, growing environment, harvest season, and craftsmanship all contribute to the character and quality of the finished tea.
Famous Dancong Aroma Types
Phoenix Dancong includes many traditional cultivars and aroma types, such as:
Mi Lan Xiang (Honey Orchid Aroma) — rich, sweet, floral, and honey-like.
Ya Shi Xiang (Duck Shit Aroma) — elegant and highly aromatic, often showing pronounced floral notes.
Zhi Lan Xiang (Orchid Aroma) — refined, floral, and lingering.
Ju Duo Zai — distinctive and complex, traditionally associated with an almond-like fragrance.
Song Zhong — one of the highly regarded traditional Dancong selections, known for its depth and complexity.
What Makes a Good Phoenix Dancong?
A fine Dancong is not simply about having a strong fragrance. We look for clarity and complexity of aroma, depth of flavor, good texture, balance, returning sweetness, and a long, clean finish.
Selecting Phoenix Dancong at SCAFTEA
Every tea at SCAFTEA is selected according to our four fundamental standards:
Shape · Color · Aroma · Flavor
For Phoenix Dancong, we pay particular attention to whether its aroma and flavor clearly express the distinctive character of its cultivar and origin, rather than simply pursuing intensity of fragrance.
